Singing in the South Sligo Summer School, Tubbercurry, Co Sligo: 13-19 July 2014

Message from Seána Haughey on behalf of the South Sligo Summer School organising committee:

This year our singing workshop tutors are 

Deirdre Scanlan,

Mairéad Ní Fhlatharta and 

Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde.  

Lilting is a feature also and Sligo musicians Cian and Caoimhe Kearins will give demonstrations during the week.  

With our tutors representing a geographical spread stretching from Tipperary to Connemara and up to the hills of Donegal, we hope that our workshops will appeal to a wide range of traditional and sean nós singers.

TG4, Spillane an Fánaí - John Reilly - Christy Moore

There was lots of filming and recording of music going on about the place all last week, for the TG4 programme, Spillane an Fánaí, due to go out during the Autumn/Winter schedule.

Some of the traditional Singers Circle were in Wynne's, talking about John Reilly. Helen Grehan knew him well from when she was a child. She spoke about her memories of the singer who died too early, but whose traditional songs were recorded and taken up by Christy Moore and Planxty and many more since.

Clíona sang a couple of verses of  Úna Bhán and did a bit of chat as Gaeilge i dtaobh John Reilly agus an dá lá a chaith Tommy Munnelly agus DK Wilgus i Mainistir na Búille á thaifead i 1969.

Christy Moore will be giving a concert in Boyle on Thursday, 26th June, supported by the Grehan sisters, to raise funds for a plaque in memory of John Reilly.

TG4 agus Mainistir na Búille: Spillane an Fánaí

Spillane an Fánaí: John Spillane travels the country, visiting small towns and seeking musical inspiration from the communities along the way.

Beidh an Fánaí agus a fhoireann ag fánaíocht leo i gceantar Mhainistir na Búille i Mí Bealtaine. Feicfear thart timpeall na háite iad agus iad ag ullmhú sraith eile cláir do TG4. Beidh caint, ceol agus amhránaíocht á thaifead acu agus scannánaíocht á dhéanamh acu sa cheantar máguaird. Coinnigh súil amach dóibh.

March 2014

We had a good turn out and an excellent selection of songs in March. George, Frank, Frances, Breege, Helen, John, Clare, Tony, Kevin, all in good voice. Eugene made a nod towards Brendan Behan's anniversary and sang the Captains and the Kings.

Cliona polished up (and off) how she could live at the top of a mountain and Táim corrtha ó bheith im' aonor. Welcome back Marion. Frances and Dermot stayed schtum, but maybe next time? 

For your diaries: change in APRIL [Easter] date for the Boyle Traditional Singers

The March session of the Boyle Singing Circle will take place on the third Saturday as usual, 15 March 2014.
The third Saturday in April is on the Easter weekend and so we're moving the April Singers' Circle date back a week to earlier date of the 12th April 2014.
